Job Description
The Advising Coordinator will serve as liaison and advocate between the Highlander Success Center and their assigned college. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Academic Advising. The position responsibilities related to this role include managing a caseload of students, attending college leadership team and curriculum committee meetings to discuss advising issues and provide updates on advising policies, procedures, and technology. The coordinator will supervise at least one advisor and is responsible for resolving complex problems related to curriculum, course prerequisites, and eligibility by referring to the university catalog and other appropriate resources. This position will also oversee the assigned college academic petition process for requests for exceptions to university and college policies and procedures. The coordinator will review and edit the Highlander Success Center brochures, major/minor degree progress sheets, and other publications related to the assigned college curricula and advising; maintain accurate data for reports and informed decision-making; assist with the collection of data and analysis of enrollment, persistence, and progression patterns of students; participate in other relevant data collection and analysis supporting the monitoring, notification, and regular interaction with students and advisors regarding academic standing and student success.
Required Qualifications
• Advanced degree* or Bachelors degree with work experience at a level which equates to an advanced degree in education, counseling, advising or college student success. (*Anticipated graduation date with an Advanced degree welcome to apply)
• Experience in planning and implementing programming for new students, student, and faculty engagement and persistence activities, and professional development.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and time management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments, analyze and solve problems, manage multiple tasks, and work independently as a self-starter.
• Ability to use current office software such as Microsoft Office.
• Must be able to work empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds on an interprofessional team.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced degree and extensive experience in education, counseling, advising or college student success.
• Experience advising programs in Business or Education.
• Experience interpreting, and applying university, state, and federal policies/procedures.
• Demonstrated experience in advising in a higher education academic setting.
• Knowledge of or experience in health and/or human services programs.
• Previous experience working with Banner, DegreeWorks, eVA, and Starfish.
• Participation in the delivery of in-service training to practitioners on academic advising and information procedures.
• Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
• Knowledge of new students, student advocacy, and student persistence and retention issues and strategies.
• Experience successfully supervising professional staff.
